Had to coast to the side of the road after almost being run over by other vehicles. Thanks I haven't recieved a code while towing my boat. I was able to repeat this 3-4 times consistently, however when driving home at the end of the night everything was normal. But vehicle still dies while driving. It is extremely unsafe and scary. I went and bought a new battery, day after I replaced that, my van needed to be jumped each time I wanted to start it.
I wouldn't specifically reccommend it. Started varying topping off, and was able to notice length of problem related to amount of top off. It has been going on since mid Dec. And having replaced the battery new and also having ensured sparkplugs are new, those issues were ruled out. It is fortunate that this occurred in a very rural area with no traffic.
We don't feel safe driving the car as it was very scary to stop without warning in the road or hwy. The ignition will crank continuously, the battery has power, but the engine will not engage. There is no power steering and radio or other--as if the power was just totally disconnected. A police officer had to push vehicle off of freeway. This issue happened before about 6 month ago and the dealer changed the transmission torque. She smelled burnt plastic smell. The computer is programmed to keep the engine running which it is. Checking the internet, I discovered it is a chronic problem with these vehicles, where the fuel pump relay goes bad.
They stated there were no issues with the van. I took it to the dealer but they said since there wasn't any codes it would be a waiste of money to have the diagnostics done. It will often leave us stranded myself and young children for 20-45 minutes waiting for it to start. They stated there was no pressure to the fuel pump. Luckily we were able to steer the vehicle to the side off the road, using its momentum.
I saw reference elsewhere of Chrysler putting out a revised part--does anyone know any specifics on that? Contacted dealer and they said if the engine light is not one they can't diagnose the problem. It comes out better when its hot. I checked the back pressure and it was good. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. Went to start it again, it kept stalling.
Once before the issues started to happen, the gas pump did not stop and the fuel over flowed. Dealer stated that there was too much air in the tires.
