Use a Phillips head to remove the three screws that hold down the battery cover. If you really want to know if it's the shift cable and not the gearbox crank the engine, have someone hold the clutch, disconnect the shift cables from the box, and manually shift the gears. With the amount of force that you say you need to shift gears that is likely straining the connector. I kept the old cable set for emergencies. Dont know if that had any causes. I don't think my gears or clutch are bad though as those would be things that get progressively worse.
