The concept was beautiful but the execution was horrible. The swing arm was so short that shaft-jacking was greatly exaggerated and made smooth shifting tricky. I fell in love with that motor. The speedometer, tachometer, hand switches, and cables are all brand new. Owner and son apparently installed carb overhaul kit of some type. Tires appear to be very good with no cracks visible.
Starting with a new motor, they can do it differently. Current challenege is everything on the front brake is needing replaced to include the master cylinder. Power delivery is a nice, steady pull from 3500 rpm to redline. Do you recall how much you put in each fork? Also check out the Harley Tri Glide® Ultra Classic® trike, which is also great for touring motorcycle travel. Smooth, plenty fast for daily use, quiet though interesting , reliable, decent mileage. I thought that was perfect. Has been my daily rider for the last 10 years. The 850s are pretty solid bikes and great torque is made when they are tuned correctly. This bike is complete, minus battery, with a key and a clear title in my name. Although they talked about a crossplane triple which is not really known at this point. Seems that most of the bikes that Yamaha produced were very reliable and the triples were the exception. There are several good groups dedicated to the Yamaha triples and their quirks like the exploding second gear.
