The torque converter ate itself 30K miles later and cost 1800 even with a 30% discount, what a piece of junk. Now it gets better back in 2007 the engine had to be replaced when the timing chain jumped and bent the valves now that was caused by fords great idea of a plastic chain guide plastic what are they kidding? They seem to be taking their time doing things right but its still gonna cost upwards of 1800 to fix. So, after all these complaints and issues with exploder transmissions, ford still does not do any recalls or offer any kind of compensation. It's the product of cheap parts on Ford's behalf. That is until the other day when I backed out of the driveway to go to work and there was the noise, anyone who has ever had a transmission go out knows the noise. I took my pos exploder to 3 different mechanic shops and not one of them could figure out how to check the tranny fluid.
I did make it home and my husband looked at this and could not find the transmission dip stick. Choose Your Option Automatic Transmission 6 cylinder 4. Thanks to Ford ingenuity, I no longer feel that loyalty. There are 8 choices for the 2000 Ford Explorer Transmission Assembly!!! This transmission unit has been inspected, tested and ready to ship. The vehicle has 86,000 miles and a transmission should last a lot longer than this. The transmission shop said that sometimes it only costs 600 or so if you take it in early enough but the bill was close to 3000 because the thing ground itself to pieces quickly once it started downhill. Was told by service writer that the transmission was a sealed system not needing service until 100,000 miles.
It finally seals up and I don't freeze to death in it during the winter months! The problems again got worse and because it was almost at the end of the 5 year warranty we told them about the problems but they couldn't find anything wrong. This transmission unit has been inspected, tested and ready to ship. It came with out any warning. I tell everyone that I come into contact with to never buy a Ford. During all of this bailout hoopla, I contacted one of my U. Their response again was that it was a sealed system and these were no big deal, nothing to worry about. Luckily I was about 1mile away from home.
Not to mention rear interior door handles and locks that no longer work! My mechanic was surprised the amount of years I got of the transmission. I made the mistake of buying a Ford, too! I've always driven conservatively and never ran it hard, but after seeing all the other complaints, I now know that this one isn't user error. They'd have never made it. I didn't even get to 100,000 miles. As yet we don't know what we are doing because we can't afford this and we feel that the dealership is responsible for the repair as it failed during the warranty period. Luckily I was able to ease it over to a repair shop where I found out that it would be 2300 dollars to fix.
Problems got worst and at the next oil change she again told them about the slipping and hard shifting. It blew one head gasket and I'm sure that it has blown a second one. I'm told the overdrive, which I've never used caused the whole thing to fail. What a bunch of crooks! My wife started complaining about the transmission at the 50,000 mile checkup. It fixed the problem for awhile, but then the problem returned after less than 750 miles.
I'm done with American cars which aren't actually even made here!. Has anyone ever filed a class action lawsuit against ford? This was a long term problem which should have been acted on back at the 50,000 mile mark. Other than routine maintenance, she hasn't had to do anything to it. I'm amazed of the amount of complaints that explorers have received especially the transmission. The spark plugs keep fouling out and it overheats. The transmission has now gone out for the second time.
I had my five year old daughter in the car and she was terrified. This happened a few times, so I took it in for service. I have never towed anything with it and it hasn't been driven hard. I think American car companies are a bunch of lazy, over-paid, crooks who don't deserve to be bailed out. Several times after backing up it would not go into gear and would just rev up and go nowhere. Barely 80k miles and the transmission dies.
I doubt that they would have even gotten out of Detroit with it. This transmission unit includes a transmission case, valve body, tail shaft and housing, torque converter automatic only , and all internal lubricated parts. The transmission guy said there is a kit upgrade that has much better quality hydraulic parts that will last longer, but no one tells you about this until it costs you 3000 for a complete rebuild. I see a class action suit coming in the near future. The stabilizer bars underneath had to be replaced and the plugs and spark plug wires have been replaced numerous times.
Ford has long known that they have had transmission problems with the things. The stereo had to be replaced almost immediately and the driver's door never sealed properly even after several attempts by the dealer to fix it. Fortunately, a very sweet little lady backed into my driver's door about a year ago and the door had to be replaced. Hopefully everything goes well and its fixed. My Explorer which i owned since 2004 when I purchased used with low miles the transmission failed when I notice the overdrive light started blinking and the started to slip. Add my name to the class-action lawsuit! The O2 sensor has gone out at least 3 times and I'm thinking 4 is more accurate.
They deserve to fail just as they create their cars to perform! I feel completely ripped off! Recently, I saw a couple trying to leave a store parking lot in their Ford Exploder and one of the rear wheels kept locking up on them. The tachometer would shoot up until it caught 2nd gear. I will never buy another ford again and I wouldn't recommend that you don't either. Trans slips between 2nd and 3rd. I finally got it in for service this winter and finding parts for it was awful.
