Posted on Mar 31, 2009 Hi,make shore the car is on level ground,best to do this from cold,you pull the oil dip stick out and clean the oil off the end of the dip stick,you will see marks on the dipstick you wont the level to be just below the top mark, so put the dip stick all the way back into the tube where the dip stick came out of then check to see if the level is ok,best to check a couple of times untill you are happy with the readings,when you are happy that the oil is correct replace dipstic job done. Also, pedal input greatly affects the shifting. This is the 4-3 pre-stroke intermediate band control valve spring. I changed all of the springs that are available through sonnax and also ordered a shift kit in hopes that there would be some pieces included. The servos operate the two front bands {2nd 3rd and 5th}. Very dangerous due to losing power steering.
Your car must be level when the fluid is checked and we therefore recommend having a mechanic with a hydraulic lift or underground bay check your transmission fluid. The main reason i wouldnt go with a used trans is the servo bores. To avoid the consistently disappointing performance of all dealerships I've encountered, I do most repair work myself. These transmissions are designed under normal driving conditions to never have to be serviced and that includes the fluid. The failure has occurred three times within the past month while driving 40-45 mph. If your valve body is removed you will more than likely find a broken spring on your 4-3 prestroke valve. And try to find a shop where the guy selling the job is also doing some of the work. Was told rebuild would be 1900 dollars. I change the trans fluid and filters in all my cars every 25,000 to 30,000 miles just to be good to them. So changing out the valve spring and checking all the rest was not too much more.
On most transmissions, you pour fluid into the transmission, but the Aviator's transmission requires injecting fluid into the transmission. Hope this post will help someone in the future.
