Nissan has extended warranty for 2007-2010 Maximas with cvt transmission but not the 04-06 models for some reason. Have seen many, many post of owners that list the exact same deffects. Transmission slips out of gear during regular driving allowing the engine to rev freely then jerking back into gear with a loud clunk. It put my car into limp mode in the middle of the street. The failure recurred whenever the vehicle was in operation. The hard shift is from the transmission anticipating the faster shift needed at higher rpms, but the engine is not performing correctly, so the acceleration is not there to complete the smooth shift.

After adding the fluid, I suggest that while the car is running, you move the shift lever through the different gears on the shifter selector, and then check the fluid again. Nissan needs to replace this transmission with a different type or re-engineer the existing one. As the car is backing up on it's own idling it will slip in and out of Reverse. Please change the air filter could be very dirty by now. Seems to get a bit worse when warmed up fully. Fluid is changed not filter but no improvements. I have Nissan Maxima 2002 and having exactly the same issue word by word that you were having.

About 2 weeks ago I noticed my tranmission would give me a pretty good jolt when driving, only around the 2500 rpm range when i was atrepmting to speed up. It has 185,000 miles and has a transmission issue. We have been trying to fix it for the last one year, but still not successful. Hard shifted a few times but generally revs between the shift. I took it in to the dealer and none of the problems showed up for them but they noted that the engine mounts were broken but that would not cause these symptoms.
