This transmission unit has been inspected, tested and ready to ship. Now again at 39K it has started slipping and is now at 41K. Within five days, the car was being backed out of the driveway when smoke began pouring from all the dash vents. I then had my entire transmission replaced because each tooth in the gears and rods were bent or damaged in some way. This event occurred while driving on Suburban roads and thankfully ended without injury. What would I expect to pay.
It is a very serious and costly problem that needs to be investigated. Within five days, the car was being backed out of the driveway when smoke began pouring from all the dash vents. A few days later it was nearly impossible to shift into 1st and I took it back to the dealership, they then told me they thought it was a problem with 1st gear. It was towed to the dealership who later said my clutch and flywheel needed to be replaced. This transmission unit includes a transmission case, valve body, tail shaft and housing, torque converter automatic only , and all internal lubricated parts. I couldn't accelerate or put it into gear.
I smelled something burning transmission fluid, most likely and parked it immediately. How can my previous car, a junker Hyundai accent with 101,000 miles at time of purchase last 36,000 more miles with a 5-speed manual, and a Jetta can't even last one day? I started looking around and all the mechanics I talked to were very surprised it was out already and that is wasn't covered under warranty. I started looking around and all the mechanics I talked to were very surprised it was out already and that is wasn't covered under warranty. This transmission unit includes a transmission case, valve body, tail shaft and housing, torque converter automatic only , and all internal lubricated parts. They told me it wouldn't be covered under the warranty because it was normal wear and tear. I smelled something burning transmission fluid, most likely and parked it immediately. And replacing the clutch isn't a permanent fix and most people have had to pay for it.
I'm thinking about it because the guy would give me a really good deal, but I don't know how much this would add to the cost. I knew that at least one shaft was bad rear shaft chewed up by loose 5th gear ; also, the complete shift and synchro cluster for 5th was bad as was the 5th gear set. Taken to dealership for blown fuses cigarette lighter , trunk latch, center console, and transmission repairs. That's ridiculous for that to go out so early. Any help would be appreciated.
The engine was producing power, but something was wrong with the transmission. In the end, they said my transmission must have been defective. My car has less than 50,000 miles. I couldn't accelerate or put it into gear. It started just clunking once and got worse and worse within the same day. The wire harness, fuse block, and controller components located behind the dash were destroyed by fire.
There are countess others who have posted this same problem on various message boards and forums all over the internet. Within a few months, a local mechanic installed a small boost gauge on the dash, which was wired into a 10 amp fuse. Vw of America prepared to send investigators to nm, but when they discovered gauge wiring may have contributed, they did not investigate. I was on my way to the dealership when it just quit. Have read of other electrical fires behind instrument panel, dash, since this time.
My first clutch started slipping at 17K miles, finally replaced at 20K. Our clutches should not be going out this early. I have driven manuals for years and have never had a problem. I then had my entire transmission replaced because each tooth in the gears and rods were bent or damaged in some way. The wire harness, fuse block, and controller components located behind the dash were destroyed by fire. Any help would be appreciated.
I got it off the road and had to push it into a parking lot until I could have it towed. I'm thinking about it because the guy would give me a really good deal, but I don't know how much this would add to the cost. What would I expect to pay. I thought I'd see what it would cost to replace the transmissions if i did buy it. After taking the tranmission apart and fixing 1st gear they test drove it they said the problem was again not fixed and that my transmission was now in essence eating itself up.
To my knowledge there have been no changes in the transmissions and my replacment is the same as all the other Jettas. It was towed to the dealership who later said my clutch and flywheel needed to be replaced. It started just clunking once and got worse and worse within the same day. You'll pay for the clutch parts but you'll save the labor to go right back in there and do it again. They have been blaming the drivers for poor driving skills. It would jerk going down the highway.
To my knowledge there have been no changes in the transmissions and my replacment is the same as all the other Jettas. . There are 16 choices for the 2002 Volkswagen Jetta Transmission Assembly!!! Good luck, I too would replace the tranny, not rebuild. How can my previous car, a junker Hyundai accent with 101,000 miles at time of purchase last 36,000 more miles with a 5-speed manual, and a Jetta can't even last one day? When I got home, I searched online for what it could be and it turns out I am not the only one this has happened to. The total cost of repair will be between 1500 and 2000 dollars.
