Need to know: Engine size? I have spent hundreds and still have not fixed the problem. He believes that the failure could have been a manufacturer defect. I bought the car brand new. Funny thing is, I bought my car with 68 km on it I'm canadian , and they gave me a list with all the times that the problem was reported, and it was reported at 11 km, before I owned the car. Now only problem is new cluster shows wrong milaege. I was traveling at what I thought was about 40 mph and I looked down and my speedometer showed 65 mph. It fluctuates from 0 mph to 120 mph.
They told me they've had to replace the ip in alot of vehicles lately. Mileage at the time is unknown. Is it just the Fuel and Temp gauges or all of the instrument cluster? When either does not zero out after you turn the engine off there is one thing that seem to work every time: 1 put key in ignition, 2 turn the key until you start to feel resistance and then turn it back turn the key so that the battery is on and stop just before the engine is about to turn over. The contact stated that while driving 70 mph, the speedometer failed and would only provide a reading of zero.
In my experience, fuses can go bad, and when you pull them out to look at them, they look perfectly fine, but when you replace them with brand new, things work properly. The dealer was not notified. This is very unsafe, and at 40k, I feel it's a bit premature. I am not sure how much this is going to cost, but it obviously is a continuous problem for most 2005 chevy Cavalier owners, and chevy should take responsibility!. This has been going two years.
One week later it went up and didn't go below 35 mph and it has kept increasing. The symptoms eventually got worse to the point that the speedometer doesn't indicate properly at all. So I went to buy new fuses and the employee at the part store checked my fuses and said they were working fine. At any rate, it sounds like it should have been a recall, added to the three I have had. I ordered 2 used ones they did not work. General motors was called the day of the problem and a report regarding the problem was created.
First it was the gas gauge that stopped about 2 years ago. I can't tell you where in your car because I don't know what size of engine your car has. My gas gauge has gone haywire too! I would take it to your local dealer and tell them that the voltage gauge sticks at times. Of course if there's anything out of line here, make a note of it. I had mine repaired there. Her temp gauge reads hot sometimes as well, even though she has no problem with a coolant leak or water pump being bad.
I've had them stay down and the odometer say error, and also I've had them stay down and the service light along with the pass. The gass backflow problem should be caused by the vent valve for the gas tank and i can replace that easy and cheep, but i dont see why a bad gauge would physicaly stop me from putting gas in the car. Its a very strange thing, because it was fine for months! Research on various internet message boards suggest this is a very common problem in not only 2003 Chevrolet Cavaliers, but other years and models of chevy vehicles. Its a very aggrivating thing. Put everything back together and the gauges dont work. All drivers need to know what their speed is in order to be safe and responsible driver.
Speedo doesn't work or works part of the time or indicates the wrong speed. There really should be a recall on this part. Gm needs to issue a recall to their Cavalier speedometers before someone gets hurt seriously! I swapped out clusters and they worked just fine. I have a 2002 Cavalier and the instrument cluster did not work after replacing the battery. This is certainly not safe and I'm assuming it's illegal to drive without a speedometer but still after years of complaints to gm of faulty instrument panels there has been no recall.
I have searched online and several people have the same problem. Unless the battery light comes on, the alternator should be good. My speedometer would stop working and on special occasions my tachometer would stop working as well. Help please Okay, this is a little on the tricky side to diagnose, but we'll give it a shot. The instrument cluster on my 2003 Chevy Cavalier has been gradualy going out over the past year.
