The rear end started making some popping noises at around 59,800 miles when I would make left or right turns. In many cases the initial maintenance check is done by the dealer at no cost check with the service department when you buy the truck for more information. I bought the work truck that is supposed to be made to tow!!!! I am going to attempt to repair myself. It's been getting worse and worse the longer I drive on it. Starting in about 2008, Dodge added a u-bolt to the front end design that would contact larger aftermarket covers when at the limit of the steering.
My biggest blessing is that I didn't get back on the freeway. Modern trucks need much less maintenance than the vehicles of 25 years ago, but they still need fluid changes, inspections, and adjustments. These 2 screws simply hold the rubber flap that is along the seam in place. It looks as if the pinion nut came off, just as the vins with the recall. The issue seem to be that the pinion nut backed off, allowing the pinion to fall back into the rings gears causing sudden lockup of the rear axle. This should be a recall Dodge!!!! I was without my truck for a month.

At first I thought it was a rear brake pad or inner shoe dragging. There are 3 bolts … that have to be removed and 2 screws. Pull the driveshaft out of the transmission tail shaft, being careful not to drop the caps located on the rear U-joint. Progressively got worse - By October - I took it to a diff. Replacing the pinion seal will prevent loss of gear oil and damage to the differential. We than heard something drop and the back tires stopped moving. I pray that everyone driving these trucks, as well as myself stay safe out there on these rough streets!!! With the engine running and the truck in park, check its transmission fluid dipstick and add a half quart at a time until the fluid level appears between the hash marks on the dipstick. Looks like this is a common defect with the rear ends with no guaranteed fix. You need a long extension to get to the one bolt that near the outter fender.
He called up Chrysler and proposed a trade: a new, red 1932 Royal Eight, for a hood ornament to match anything from Rolls-Royce. If only Dodge had the forethought to install a retainer for the pinion nut. If you drive in dusty areas, tow a trailer, idle or drive at low speeds for extended periods, or drive for short periods less than four miles at a time in below freezing temperatures, even smaller intervals are recommended.
