I replaced the fuse, cranked the truck and moved the shifter handle from park to drive and back several times and as I had figured from previous experience the fuse blew. This 2003 Ford F350 Super Duty Lariat Pickup came in with the complaint that the radio would turn off while driving down the road. After the lock cylinder was out of the way I removed the upper cover to gain access to the overdrive switch wiring. The fuel data center panel did not smell good. I have not gotten that far in the troubleshooting yet.
I also removed the fuel data center and the Climate control panel. If it is the digital instrument cluster, I can really only recommend taking it to a reputable shop or Cadillac dealer to service. The antenna cable on the right and one harness connector on the left have to be removed from the radio. Had to remove the keft kick panel and there was a yellow wire coming from the lower harness up toward the dash. I did the replacement with radio back in place. Tighten the screws until fully driven, seated, not stripped.
That may have kicked that needle all the way around to the right when power went off???. Yesterday when pulling in to get fuel I had to back up to pull in the other side on the pumps well when I went to put it in reverse I pulled on the overdrive lever and it came off and the wires were exposed ,after I finished getting fuel put it in drive and went to give it gas and nothing , the wires had shorted out and blown the fuse. I was driving along, and smelled what I felt was a smoking printed circuit board. Pull out the cluster and check the bulb. It took months to get a replacement unit from Ford because according to the dealer the units were so back-ordered due to the high rate of failure of this particular assembly.
I'm answering my own question because I found the answer to it, and someone else may have the same problem. Ford Dealer installed a new instrument cluster to include changing the fuse box. My 2003 F350 Super Heavy Duty truck instrument cluster has zero life. First I removed the lower dash cover, which is held in place by four quick release screws. If not they can usually be found at most parts stored.
Pull the handle out of the shifter assembly, push the new one into position and install the pivot pin. If this is the analog intrument cluster and the entire instrument cluster is intermittently losing illumination, remove the instrument cluster light fuse and replace it with a new fuse. If you do not see your particular vehicle listed, please call us at to discuss a quote for your cluster. Headlight switch wiring is shown below. The dash trim panel is held in place by spring style clips and … …can be pulled away from the main dash carrier panel. To remove the lever assembly simply tap the pivot pin up from the underside and finish pulling it out with a pair of pliers.
During the months I drove without a speedometer and odometer, there was no way to determine how fast I was driving nor any accurate means of keeping track of the actual mileage of the vehicle. Next, remove the 4 screws that holds the cluster to the dash. A vehicle without a speedometer should be outlawed. According to the dealer, many Ford trucks have this same problem and this was not an isolated incident. When I restarted the car, the fan had cut off and the temp gauge was working!!!!! Or, move to another state where they don't worry about stupid things like a light bulb. I was about to give up and engineer a aftermarket temp gauge, and temp sensor for the fan relay.
The wire going from the fuse to the instrument cluster is red and yellow and the wire between the cluster and the alternator is lite green and red. The ribbon cable connector needs to be disconnected as shown in the next two images. I then restarted the car. All the information necessary in order for a feature to operate. Had this problem 6 months ago and rebuilt the alternator it was shot. The sending unit for the 2. I had the temperature gauge working and the fan working!!!!!! It is very important to understand: where the input originates from.
!!!! After looking through fuse information and wiring diagrams I found that the overdrive switch was on this fuse circuit. I decided to replace the lever assembly with switch and harness due to the degree of damage. I wasn't sure if it was a wiring problem, fuse, relay, or maybe the computer got a little wet when the heater core started leaking. After I picked the truck up, drove 40 miles and again the the same problem. I still wasn't receiving a signal to the temperature gauge and the fan was staying on. Once you have that off, there is a box small box that holds two relays. There are several harness connectors attached to the rear of the instrument cluster.
Sep 07, 2011 Look at fig. The fuel gauge needle was flipped all the way clockwise. I finally got the car back together with the new heater core and ran the car and there was heat, but no fan or temperature gauge working as usual. The float is made of brass and over time they leak and sink causing the fuel gauge to read empty. At the same time the power windows and the dome light would no longer work. I removed the steering column covers by first removing the retaining screws and pull the lower cover off. If it's good, see if you can clean the contact surfaces to get it working again.
