Finally the 3 valve engines are notorious for valve train issues cam phasers, solenoid valves, chain tensioners,. Simple and efficient good truck, plenty of room in cab and in box. It's also using about a quart of oil every 1500 miles. It now has 87,000 miles on it! We are also surrounded by lakes and rugged dirt roads, and this truck will pretty much take you anywhere. It pulled my car trailer with great ease when it was stock with just dual exhaust added.

I'm not sure if it was just not installed properly my son installed it for me or if it's another problem altogether, but I do know this is a common problem with these trucks. Added a Roush Charger two years ago. Mechanically under the hood, it has been pretty reliable. Very reliable vehicle and the look of it still isn't outdated after 15 years. Also needed a transmission rebuild around 130,000 mi.
Spark Plugs must be replaced every 50,000 miles. See YouTube and other internet sources for more info. That was when I found out the rear caliper had seized, but otherwise just lots of gas and a 5 quart jug of oil behind the seat. It has developed a rear main seal seep. I purchased a Melling 360 high output pump and it's like a new truck. Especially used, which I did. It now has 87,000 miles on it! I do have the high temp dieseling sound some times but so far no cam phaser problems.
If you looking at one without visible signs of rust on the frame, I'd shove an inspection camera in through the drain holes and have a good look up and down the length of the frame from the inside. Then, if you buy it, get it flushed, sealed and rust proofed on the inside as well as the outside. But should have bought one that is a 08' or 10' model year. One dependable Truck I bought this truck used in 07 and it had 50,000kms. Have loved it from the start!! One other downside is that the seats really hold stains.
I have replaced the tires on it with Silent Armours, and that's about it. My 16 year old drives in now with 203,000 miles. I use it only periodically, but I did risk taking it on a coast to coast trip. The second big issue occurs with all of the 5.
