About the only cons to own this van - at least in my climate - is the rust. Once it was adjusted the van drives very nicely, more like a car than most minivans. We needed a minivan for our growing family. It had dual power sliding doors, power sliding door windows, fold flat rear bench seat, and just about power everything else. It has been a real pleasure to drive. It's pleasant to live with. Remedy Mazda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front passenger air bag inflator with an alternate inflator, free of charge.
We bought it from my parents w. I hated the car at first, because it had a transmission that shifted and made the car jerk. In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger frontal air bag, these passenger air bag inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to absolute humidity and temperature cycling. We had rust really start to present itself noticeably about 4 years ago. Apart from that the kids and dogs enjoy having loads of space, rear air con, and good stereo system, and sun roof. It has excellent braking and good gas mileage for a car its size. Specifically, vehicles sold, or ever registered, in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas, Puerto Rico, Saipan and Guam.
It is about 6 inches narrower and a bit shorter Mazda 6 size than our other minivan. Other than that the vehicle has been a solid family hauler and commuter for me. Done throwing money at it. That is becoming silly now and I am getting ready to let it go soon anyway. The recall began July 2016.

We get 20 in town, and 26 or so highway. Complete transmission failure at 72,000 miles. Only gripes I have, is it takes a few seconds for the turbo to kick in, but once it does it powers along motorways very well, with little body roll in sharp bends. However, it provides less interior room, slower acceleration, and lower gas mileage than some competitors. We got 12 months warranty, 4 new tyre's, a broken wing mirror replaced, and the majority of scratches removed by the dealer. We also really love the fold down 3rd row seat and the fact that the 2nd row seats can slide together. In addition, four-wheel anti-lock brakes were added to the standard equipment list for 2004. Both are excellent engines β and both vans are blessed to be among the few with something other than purely utilitarian source of motive power. So far the car has been excellent, it's very well built, hard wearing interior, and the 136 bhp diesel pulls very well, even with 7 people on board. Mazda also compressed the inner mechanical workings, costing us big bucks in labor if we ever need any work done.

We will be looking to replace this vehicle soon. Mazda's number for this recall is 8114L. They have since grown up and gone off to college and I am still driving this van. I just with they kept making them! However, it is quite a reliable car. It bucks and surges horribly especially with the air conditioner on. Some people may also find it easier to park.
An online search showed that this was a problem Mazda had. It also seemed to pause before accelerating, which is bad on the short on ramps here in California. It turns out to be the opposite. The van has adjustable middle seats that can be bucket seats or a double bench seat and can be removable. It's lighter and more compact than, say, a Honda Odyssey, making it more agile and easier to park. Mazda also compressed the inner mechanical workings, costing us big bucks in labor if we ever need any work done.
