To my understanding gm has a recall on several vehicles using the same gauge step motors but does not include this model or others that use this same part. The instrumental messaging center failure also caused the lights to flicker and become dim. I searched the internet and I have noticed that many many people have had this issue with 2002 through 2005 monte carlo's. The contact stated that while sitting at a traffic stop, the speedometer indicated that he was traveling 100 mph. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and provided no remedy.
The speedometer intermittenly failed to display the actual speed that the contact was driving. Not to mention there are a lot of other people having the same exact problem which supports the defective part theory. Battery was diconnected which stopped the smoke.
