Drove it about a month and the turbo bypass solenoid valve failed. Luckily, I did these changes myself which saved me about 2000 dollars. Multiple reports of this failure. This is common on all Turbo minis. Bypassers pushed me off the rest of the way. Although there are only a few miles, the main thought I have is, why haven't I had any problems in the 12 years I have owned it? The electric auxiliary water pump may fail and cause the circuit board to overheat.
Like any vehicle, the Mini Cooper will have problems. I'm sure the dealership will fix the problem. The service costs are pathetically high- it's not a Porsche, performance is mediocre. It wasn't until 2013 that I had to have any work done on it besides the normal maintenance. Still love driving my Mini! No issues came up but I stopped driving it because I saw the oil light come on, and I know that couldn't be good, especially since oil was added between changes.

I'm very pleased with the results so far. I bought a red 2005 Mini Cooper automatic for the wife and a silver 2008 Mini Cooper S 5 Speed for myself. Turbo oil line needed to also be changed. We then found about the tailpipes recall and contacted Mini of Arlington again who said the recall had been done even though the pipes are clearly sticking out past the bumper. They told me it the alignment was bad and the tires needed to be replaced. The battery was relatively new. Fuel economy is impressive at 33 mpg overall, but it requires premium fuel.
It needed an engine gasket after only 60,000 miles. I can almost guarantee that, at some point, it will start leaking. It starts as a drip, and can drip on the driveway. I kept complaining and they finally took the car in to have it checked. Mini is a shifty and dishonest company that will not stand behind its product. This connection is directly in contact with the hot side of the turbo and fails due to excessive heat.
Called Mini they said their dealership service dept had to look at it. It's small and compact but plenty of room. Advised by independent mechanic turbo unit defective, needs replacement.
