With a lot of humor and an appealing young cast, Ferguson, at the worst possible times including right after getting out of the shower with only a towel around his waist finds himself suddenly transported back to 1918. Raymond explains to him that he has a time-twin, to whom he's relocated in space and time whenever one of them is in trouble. Once, again from the perspective of someone who never read a Biggles book, the time travel angle technically works. William explains that he knows what happened, that it will occur again and that Jim must come to London. But it has absolutely nothing to do with anything the Biggles character has stood for historically.
This brings me to my first question to the producers. Johns as a child and have re-read them as an adult now my own children are old enough for them. To sum it all up, I had fun regressing and watching it with my boys who sat quietly and gave the film their utmost attention which is a huge accomplishment, I must add. A lightning bolt streaks across the screen and reveals the title in fluorescent neon: Biggles pictured above. In fact, it makes complete sense to have a character you can get to know and sympathize with. No time to think about that because Jim suddenly finds himself thrust through time and on a battlefield. My kids enjoyed watching Jim and Biggles jump around through time, gunning down Germans in non-violent and bloodless fashion. Sound effects offer appropriate crackle. A biplane crashes nearby and Jim rescues the pilot just before it explodes into a ball of flames. From their point of view the time travel element made the film memorable. Only those who have been able to follow their adventures more fervently would be able to pick out the obvious flaws, but all in all, I had fun with it, even to see why a helicopter could outmatch a plane in the air. Jumping back and forth through the decades without warning, Jim is recruited to help Biggles take on the Germans, who are putting the final touches on a superweapon, requiring quick thinking, blunt force, and exploitation of the time holes to help defeat the enemy.
For those of you who are unaware, Biggles is the nickname for the fictional character of James Bigglesworth, an English World War One fighter pilot created by the author W. The soundtrack also further compounds the Biggles problems. Textures are appealing on costumes and locations, and facial particulars are strong, exploring subtle make-up work and emotional intensity. One of the sets I owned was an adaptation of Biggles and it was several years before I finally saw the full film. Without knowledge of the Biggles character, Hyde-White was the outsider the producers were looking for, suddenly thrust into an adventure that required him to be confused. What matters to me is the production of a good film.
They freeze the body, but in the modern day, two geeks pledging a fraternity accidentally thaw the corpse, which proceeds to infect the campus with parasites that transform their hosts into killer zombies. I don't know if this got a theatrical release in the States, but the film has excellent production values, is shot on location in London including the Tower hotel and Tower Bridge and about rural England. Biggles is on another reconnaissance mission for the German secret weapon. A time travelling plot device coupled with pedestrian paced action make this film rather dull. However, this live-action adaptation of Biggles has been giving a sci-fi twist to try and draw in a bigger demographic of the audience. This mystery man Peter Cushing waits until Jim returns to his apartment. I have managed to read some of the Biggles books when I was younger and this movie was very much like what I would have expected, a very tongue in cheek version of the written works.
The ending is very cute with Biggles and his appealing band of men in trouble again.
