Yeah, at this point in the story's history, forcing Gladiators to have sex with random strangers was commonplace. When the top salvage company in the world loses a billion dollars of 15th century artifacts, chief archaeologist Mave Adams hires ex - criminal Jack Riordan to track it down. Things unravel and the adventure begins. And, at first glance, the manipulative coupling of Spartacus and Roman brat Ilithyia wasn't all that bad. Initially the warrior, whose name is not given, agrees to fight alongside the Roman army to help defeat barbarians from a rival tribe, but he returns home to defend his village when a Roman general decides to abandon the warrior's village and ignore the barbarians to pursue glory elsewhere. We are therefore never given the chance to fully invest in the characters, which would not be a problem if the film were not meant to be taken seriously. But because these two were wearing kinky masks to hide their identities, and had been placed together by so that she could have leverage over Ilithyia, it kind of ruined the afterglow when they found out that they just had sex with each other's idea of a vomitous hellbeast.
However, as a standalone cinematic adventure, Blood, Sand, and Gold falls as flat and underwhelming as a treasure chest full of sand. Gunfire, vehicles, and explosions all sound as realistic as could be expected. There are some beautiful shots of sprawling deserts that serve to immerse the audience in the world of the film far more completely than any of the dialogue spoken by the actors. All cast members have a few good moments, and most have laughably forced ones. There are a few twists and some nice action. The effects are also terrific, given the minuscule budget.
There is a lot of ground to cover in an adventure flick, and this one clocks in at under 90 minutes. Recommended to kill some time. These people knocked boots sandals like their lives depended on it. Most of the heinous, unabashed abuse that Spartacus suffered in Season 1 had to do with his wife's death and a little pesky thing called enslavement. This has action, adventure and is a good watch. Sex is actually used as a weapon for sure, but there are times when this show absolutely punishes the audience with astonishingly grotesque sex scenes that make one want to take a boiling shower right after viewing - just to try and wash away the soot and shame. A person whose very touch makes you wretch. A more comedic take on the genre might be able to get away with warping characters from fight scene to chase scene to exposition scene without any time for the audience to digest the action, but not a film with so serious a tone.
