Get a new Conti belt and tensioner. Read up on vibration issues here. You do not need to change belts if you dont want to, but mark the direction and make sure goes on in same direction. Did you have to do the new compressor to be able to add the tensioner if so is there a part for that compressor or was just preventative maintenance on your part? However, since you are also experiencing vibration, I would not totally discount the albeit remote possibility of harmonic balancer separation. Much better news than a harmonic balancer. Is is possible the sprocket is chewed up or is it just the pulley its self that eats its internals? Now we are researching and building new kits at an exponentially increasing pace. Sounds like your idler pulleys took a dump, fell off, etc. When working in close quarters of the engine compartment it's easy to forget the routing of the belt s. If so draw a diagram of all the pulleys connect the pulleys in your piccy with lines as per your belt run on the engine. It wraps around the crank pulley shaft and sometimes shreds pieces past the bearing seal into the oil pan, which sometimes clogs the oil intake. Hogie, did you use a lock or split washer on the bolt for the tensioner or Loctite? It was a new contitrac belt that. No idea why its so expensive, maybe the Hijackers have turned mechanics. When I called the dealer to see if they had the tool, the guy said there were only 12 in the entire country. You may want to Print the Diagrams for future use. The sound is a clear indication that your vehicle may require a belt and pulley repair. How did you remove old belt. I just joined this forum recently and wow, I'm really glad I did as it's been a wealth of information so far. The second poster on the thread mentions his three year old 520d with a failed harmonic balancer. I am thinking of taking it off before ordering. He said I needed a new battery, which was then replaced. The item must be new and in its original manufacturer packaging to be eligible for a cash refund.
I think I will reorder the tensioner. It was a slow leak till finally all the oil and freon escaped. New tensioner comes with a pin installed and you need to line up the belt on all pullies except on the tensioner. Find the tension pulley located at the bottom of the motor. There is a recessed torx star fitting on the front of the belt tensioner see image below. This information is only a summary.
So far i gather the procedure is: -Remove fan and housing -Release tensioner and remove air con comp belt - Release tensioners and remove serpentine belt - Lock crank shaft in place using the flywheel? Boby - I am sure you are beyond this one. It wasn't really that bad , once you get in there ,it's just alittle tight. Turn the wrench handle, the pulley moves and the tension on the belt slackens. If it's wedged around the crankshaft, can I unwedge it by turning the crankshaft the opposite way while pulling on the belt? I don't know if anyone here is from that area or knows of schatz and krum. Ok I have to admit I gave up looking for the port on the flywheel and as I didn't have access to the tool that locks the flywheel and was not risking sticking a drill bit in there and it snapping like others have. And, does any one know of any reliable Master Technicians in Manhattan or New York City that has their own shop? More and more of manufacturers are going to Elastic Belts, to get customers back to the dealers, so buying a tool from snap on is a wise investment, and the cost is much less then buying one for each model car on the market. You might want to spray down the whole engine bay wit deep purple.
I lost the power steering and aircon, and I got a battery charge warning. Then, turn the tensioner to wind it, slip the belt on to the tensioner pulley, remove the pin, and release the tension on the tensioner.
