Clan of Xymox have been in the unfortunate position of always being compared to other bands since their inception. He started four separate projects, though the focus was always on Mortiis. Originally formed in Holland in 1983 as , Clan of Xymox became one of the pioneers of the dark and moody electronic music that later became known as darkwave. In late 2009 and early 2010 earlier music has been partly reprogrammed and re-arranged for future live use. It operated between 1995 and 1999 while Mortiis resided in Halmstad, Sweden, and released mostly limited-edition vinyl. The band's presence on 's U. The album was limited to 500 copies. In 2012 the band released a cover album, Kindred Spirits, featuring covers of several influential post-punk and new wave groups in Mooring's own musical styling. They shortened their name to Xymox again in 1988 and signed to a subsidiary of Polygram.

Wolbert got signed by of to the publishing side of his label,. The band embarked on sell out tours around the world and featured in college alternative and mainstream Billboard charts. Ellefsen wrapped up work on the soundtrack to the movie Broken and Renegade Films in 2007. He stayed with the band just over one year before going on to create his own solo project, though unlike his previous band the music would be oriented. Nevertheless, the group have produced an impressive body of work that consistently absorbed new sounds while remaining faithful to the '80s goth rock menu. The mask was always coupled with ears.
Wolbert and Moorings moved to London and the band toured the United States and Europe. After the departure of Nooten and Wolbert in the early 1990s, their music turned increasingly goth. Anka Wolbert lives in London and now works as a web developer. The sub label Wing seized to exist and when Wing declined to release the next album, Metamorphosis, Nooten and Wolbert left the band for good. Anka's songwriting skills have proven to be the best even since the Xymox-era of what she had to display. Mojca Zugna joined Moorings as bass-player and album cover designer and two albums followed on independent label Zok Records - Metamorphosis 1992 and Headclouds 1994 - before Moorings decided it was time for a change. This aspect was lost over time and Mortiis slowly formed into a band.
Frank Weyzig the last of the original line-up parted ways with Moorings after the 1994 tour, after which Moorings moved back to the Netherlands and took a three-year hiatus from music-writing. A year later, lengthened their name to and recorded a self-titled album in 1985, followed by the next year. It was dissolved as Mortiis moved back to Norway in late 1999.
Slug Magazine reviewed the album as exotic, atmospheric pop with an edge and 'a triumphant return'. The collected music will eventually be released as a Mortiis album. It came about in 2001 when Mortiis was set to release , which was such a departure from his earlier records that he wanted to brand it in a way to signify this. The Grudge took on a heavy emphasis, combining grinding guitars and industrial programming. A year later, Xymox lengthened their name to Clan of Xymox and recorded a self-titled album in 1985, followed by Medusa the next year.
The Xymox era ended in 1997 when, in the midst of a revival in the gothic scene, Ronny Moorings made the decision to restart Clan of Xymox and return to his musical roots. Farewell from 2003 was a themed album with bittersweet goodbyes to lovers and friends as the main topics.
