Congo has a run time of 1 hour and 39 minutes and stars Joe Don Baker, Bruce Campbell, Laura Linney and Tim Curry. I like Congo because it's different: in the seven years since I first saw it in June of 1995, I've seen countless other movies, but Congo still retains its uniqueness, I believe. Usually movies areeither thought provoking and interesting, or entertaining. It was also nominated for seven. Meanwhile, Peter Elliott, a at the , and his assistant Richard teach to using a named Amy. Travis Joe Don Baker , who owns the TraviCom and is Karen's employer. I watched it with them and now that I amseventeen years old, I feel that this was one of my most cherishedmemories.
Monroe, Karen, and Peter fight off the gorillas and flee deeper into the mine, where they discover Charles' body, holding a giant blue diamond. He poses as a wealthy , but is soon revealed to be in dire financial straits. Also, the film takes a little too long to begin gaining momentum, which at times cause the film to drag though the payoff in the latter half of the movie is well worth the wait. I was disappointed, but I still have a soft spotfor this story. It is about a primatologist and afriend who have a talking gorilla via electronic headset and decide togo to it's birthplace to see what its like and discover what happenedto a team that went their a little while earlier to find a treasure inwhich Tim Curry randomly appears in a fake accent and pretends to be acompanion who is searched for by a stereotypical soldier looking dudewho turns out not to be a friend and, yeah. Dylan Walsh gives an earnest, appealing performance as the earnest, appealing Peter Elliot, whose devotion to Amy however laughable it is for many viewers gives the movie some heart.
In the politically unstable Africa, they meet the experienced guide Captain Munro Kelly Ernie Hudson that bribes Captain Wanta Delroy Lindo to let them go. Travis implores Karen to lead another expedition to the site to find his son, who is also her former fiancé. A different game for the and was in development, but was cancelled. However, the film ran into problems when Crichton learned that he could not use a real gorilla to portray the character of Amy, which led to him leaving the project. She accused him of not being human. It features not one, but two standout performances.
I remember being only six years old when my older brother and hisfriends rented this one night. There are definitely some moments, particularly in the latter half of the movie, that are actually quite frightening. And he is one of the central characters! That being said, I still love watching it, I can't explain it, I guessit's so bad that it's good for a laugh whenever I see it, and watchingpeople devoured by psychopathic gorillas never gets old. SoI could sit and watch it. It beats counting the frogs jumping in your swimming pool or something like that.
Rick Baker's work in Gorillas in the Mist and the Mighty Joe Young remake is the best I've seen; and although Amy created by Stan Winston's team, not Baker's is inferior to Baker's best work, she's better than some of Baker's apes in Burton's terrible Planet of the Apes remake. Ernie Hudson, Tim Curry And Joe Don Baker All made excellent performances. However they have funding issue but the Romanian philanthropist Herkermer Homolka Tim Curry offers to financially assist them. The music was great as was the scenery. Travis Joe Don Baker , to the Congo to determine the whereabouts of his son's missing diamond-hunting team.
Linney is appealing, Curry turns in a usual fine job, and cameos from Bruce Campbell and Joe Don Baker add to the quirky atmosphere. Even Bruce Campbell, who I liked at the time. Unwilling to leave the diamonds, is cornered then killed by a pack of gorillas. Scientist Karen Ross Laura Linney is sent by her father-in-law, mogul R. And from there on, theymust try to avoid danger from snakes, hippos, and a wild pack ofmutated monkeys that intend to eat their flesh and kill everyone. As an example, Tim Curry has been dismissed too oftenas the comic relief when he is actually central to the plot and turnsin a deliciously dense performance, above and beyond the limitations ofhis character.
A battle between a very cute talking gorilla, and her human friends, and some evil bad gorillas guarding a secret diamond mine. But somehow, the film didnot deliver what it could easily have delivered: action plusthought-provoking story about animal intelligence. The film is no masterpiece,it is a bit cheesy, but it does have a sense of fun, ie. Want to know what the movie's about? In Africa, the group meets expert guide Captain Monroe Kelly but are captured by local militia leader Captain Wanta, who grants them passage for a sizable bribe which the well funded Karen again provides. His real aim is to find the mythical Lost City of Zinj, where he lost another expedition some years before.
I won't summarize the plot or analyze the film in explicitdetail, but I will say that it is briskly paced, sharply written, andfeatures solid characterizations, or as solid as they can be in anadventure epic. Things quickly become complicated as the group has to bribe their way into the country, they find out their guide has a questionable past and their plane is shot down as they attempt to fly into Zaire. There was action and a plot. And Frank Marshall's straightforward, low-key direction nicely contrasts with the inherent absurdity of the storyline; a more intense and heavy-handed director would not have been a good choice to helm a movie like Congo. I've read Crichton's book and it's quite good, the movie however, misses a lot of the time. Considering the slightly campy tone, the special effectsare well above what anyone could expect.
Some people hate Congo simply because it lacks a Mel Gibson or Bruce Willis; nevertheless it does boast a talented and interesting cast of mostly underrated actors. Romanian philanthropist Herkermer Homolka offers to fund the expedition. Homolka, crazy with lust begins to collect diamonds as the others try to warn him to stop. Please stopcriticising him, when he was actually one of the reasons why I like themovie. So that was kindof a damper on the special effects as well as Tim Curry's bad acting.
