When a series of underwater caverns are discovered that may hold the key to not only the origin of the Mayan culture, but also contact with alien life forms, an professor Steve Wilcox hires some cave divers lead by beautiful diver Dannielle Noble Carla Ortiz to guide him to this buried treasure, promising them a huge payoff. Not for it's casting, acting or average editing and cinematography. Usually, this makes for some boring film watching, but surprisingly, Carla Ortiz is a pretty solid actress and gorgeous to boot. Director: Joaquin Rodriguez Cast: Olga Fonda, Carla Ortiz, Steve Wilcox, Mark Tacher, Juan Pablo Castañeda, Mauricio Martinez, Luis Felipe Tovar, Bernardo Peña, Héctor Ortega, Mauricio Martinez, Ricardo Lima Martinez. Well worth 5 stars for it's overall content and potential. .
As it is, this is a fun adventure story that should not be thought about too deeply. Made by a better Director or with a bigger investment this movie could have been absolutely brilliant with a lot of potential. Noble is haunted by the death of her husband and though she is hesitant to lead the expedition, her crew and the money convinces her to venture deep into the Mayan jungle, not knowing what otherworldly horrors lay waiting for her. Now they must escape the immediate wrath of the submerged aliens and ward off the extraterrestrial apocalypse predicted by the Mayans so long ago. A professor hires a professional team of cave divers to explore long buried underwater ancient Mayan ruins in the hope that he can discover how and why the civilization disappeared. Instead of finding glory they will find hell hidden in the underwater caves of Xibalba. But the team stumbles upon a locked underwater prison that has held evil alien beings and unintentionally free them with their discovery.
Alan Green an American Archelogist leads Danielle Noble an her team of cave divers on an expedition searching the Mayan ancient records. I enjoyed that they used the current resurgence of interest in ancient archeology as the basis for this adventure action film, as there is many many places left to reveal in the South American jungles still hidden from modern eyes. Knowing I would either get lost, hyperventilate, or both if I attempted anything obscurely like that, these underwater sequences were effective and nicely framed to show the wonder and the claustrophobic elements of such an endeavor. Acting isn't bad and could have done more with substance in the storyline. .
