In this special, Donal Duck has never experienced Christmas and decides to stay during the winter months, instead of flying south like the rest of his duck brethren. Part of the Emmy- and Annie-winning Mickey Mouse cartoon series, Duck the Halls includes cameos by Uncle Scrooge McDuck, nephews Huey, Dewey and Louie, Professor Ludwig Von Drake, Gus Goose and of course, Santa Claus. It also reminded me of something that just wasn't inherently Disney? As Santa offers Christmas magic, Pluto gets turned into a reindeer because, why not? In Duck the Halls, Donald Duck opts to stay put when his flock of family and friends migrate south for the winter, and finally gets to enjoy his first Christmas winter wonderland with the most enthusiastic holiday reveler ever, Mickey Mouse, along with Minnie, Pluto and Goofy. I seriously watched this part several times because it was so good. About Huey, Dewey and Louie, I can't remember if we have actually seen them before in this series either if so it can't be many episodes — but we've seen Donald in lots of episodes. The Twins There are also several references to old Disney cartoons. Which brings me to the humor.
Overall though, this was an interesting and very welcome change to Disney's animation and style. What was your favorite part? I literally laughed out loud during a few special moments. They're not really known for taking too many risks with their animation. Yes, I realize that there were the early shorts like Steamboat Willie from 1928, that had a very over exaggerated, rubber hose style. This is done by the same production team as the new shorts, and has the same sense of humor, just stretched over 22 minutes instead of 5-10 minutes. It was absolutely hilarious and a great way to kick off the holiday season. This Disney special doesn't force a religious aspect in fact, the only religious scene is a brief parody? If you enjoy those, this is more of the same, but longer and with Christmas. I always thought they flew South. Its Halloween night and Mickey Mouse is ready to unleash a spooktacular surprise on his friends and nephews - the ultimate scary story! But my son clearly found the cartoons to be hilarious, and the more we watched - it became very apparent that somehow Disney had tapped into the spunky, crazy energy that had made the core characters so delightful in the first place - something that has kind of gotten lost in things like the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and House of Mouse.
