Hobbes attacks Jonesy and in the ensuing struggle manages to shoot and mortally wound him. It was never explained why but when Hobbes looks around the now decrepit cottage he finds that the man had scribbled the name Azazel on the wall. Hobbes explains that he has poisoned himself, which will leave Azazel without a host, before shooting and killing Jonesy. Hobbes, through hints given initially by Reese, and later by the apparent copycat killer, tracks down a woman named Gretta Milano. However, she reconsiders after a terrifying encounter with a man on the street. Stanton and Jonesy show up to arrest Hobbes; however, Jonesy reveals himself to be possessed by Azazel and kills Stanton. There is a connection between all these threads, which wediscover along with Hobbes.
They have a private chat where Reese gives him a riddle of sorts and then speaks in a strange language. . Kazan writes plausible, literate dialogue and Hoblit creates a realistic world,so that the horror never seems, as it does in less ambitious thrillers, to feelat home. And strange, too, are other developments,including the verdict of a linguist that the gas chamber victim's words, on avideotape, were spoken in ancient Aramaic, a language he had no way of knowing. Azazel prepares to shoot himself, which will allow him to possess Hobbes, the only other person for miles.
The murderer is later revealed to be a fallen angel known as , who possesses human beings by touch. Gretta explains to Hobbes that Azazel is a fallen angel with the power to possess human beings by touch. Gretta explains that the demon will try to ruin his life by another way, and warns him of the inevitability of Azazel's victory. Azazel inhabits several of the witnesses and gives false accounts that the shooting was unprovoked, throwing further suspicion on Hobbes. Unfortunately, it's just a recycling of old materials, and not all that thrilling.
Gretta explains that, if forced out of a host body, Azazel can only travel in spirit form for as long as one breath can sustain him; if he does not possess another host in time, he will die permanently. Hobbes goes to the Milano's cabin and calls Jonesy, knowing he will trace the call. Movies like this play with our apprehensions, instead of slamming uswith freaky special effects. Azazel takes possession of Hobbes' body and frantically attempts to flee, but succumbs to the poison and dies. Azazel boasts to Hobbes that even if his current host body is killed, he can transfer to any new host body in the surrounding area, without even needing to touch them. To provoke Hobbes, Azazel possesses his nephew Sam and attacks John's brother Art in their home. As the teacher, Azazel draws a gun and forces Hobbes to shoot his host in front of a group of bystanders.
By suggesting that the evil resides in the realworld, they make everything scary; one of the movie's best moments is suppliedby a pop machine. We search near and far for original movie trailer from all decades. The riddle leads him to a once decorated policeman who one day went to his cottage in the woods and killed himself. The audience discovers it before Hobbes--but wehave the advantage, because we know he's in a horror movie and he doesn't. There should be, at the core of the protagonist in any noirstory, guilt and shame, as if they feel they deserve their fate.
