It then transmits that data to the computer for a better air-to-fuel ratio. I've only worked on a few trucks so far and it has always been an expensive computer that has solved the problems. Bank two is on the side with cylinder number two. New scanners are real expensive but they become obsolete real fast too. Inside you will see several fine wires protruding into the tube.
Trace the wiring from the sensor body back to its wiring plug and disconnect it. Be aware that underlying problems can be taking place in the operation of the Focus that could be causing the O2 sensor to fail and by simply replacing the sensor, you may just be temporarily solving the problem and inevitably damage the new sensor as well. If it is stubbornly rusted or stuck, light the propane torch and heat the area of pipe around the O2 sensor to expand the pipe. Remove the O2 sensor once the pipe expands enough to release it, but then allow ample time for the pipe to cool down. And I surely appreciate all the help and advise you have given me. AutoTrust Platinum provides a growing selection of low-priced, premium quality oxygen sensor system components!. Starting with '96 models the manufacturers started trying to standardize their computer systems, at least as far as the computer language they used.
Then taught in a community college for nine years. Make sure the parts store that scans your Focus has a qualified person to help you find out why the sensor failed to begin with. Let me ask you a question my friend, you seem very knowledgeable, on mechanics. And the 3rd 02 sensor is after the cat. The auto part store should re-set the check engine light for you if you purchase the O2 sensor from them, and be certain that it is the correct and assembled O2 sensor for your vehicle and not a put together universal O2 sensor Nov 29, 2010.
There is one near the manifold in the front pipe area and another one near the catalytic converter. A professional load-test will show that. Besides being able to get really specific with well over 1000 potential fault codes, that is when they added the oxygen sensors after the catalytic converters to monitor how well they're working. Larger repair shops have multiple scanners so no mechanic has to wait to use one, but when they start to see fewer older cars they will often sell most of that equipment and just keep one on hand in case one of those cars comes in. The o2 sensor is behind that screwed into the exhaust.
The code will point to either bank 1 sensor 1; bank 1 sensor 2; bank 2 sensor 1; bank 2 sensor 2. Quality-tested to ensure efficient fuel combustion and helps reduce harmful emissions. Not how the wiring is routed, as it must not come into contact with hot exhaust components. Normally when three oxygen sensors are used, number three is the one after the catalytic converter. Kepp the sensor tip clean while it is removed. That will reduce its maximum current output to exactly one third of its rated value which is not enough to run the entire electrical system under all conditions. Check for any damaged wiring or loose wire connector at the O2 sensor and if they are alright then replace the O2 sensor and then re-set the check engine light.
Unscrew the sensor from its location, and remove it. Every switch and sensor becomes a small computer module, right down to the headlight switch and door switches. The code will tell you which O2 sensor it is. Universal Oxygen Sensor features stainless steel shell, hex nut, shield, Teflon-covered insulated wires, high-temperature rubber internal and external seals, and threaded tube coated with anti-seize compound. My coworkers used a Genysis and liked it a lot but I never used them so I don't know much about them other than they're a popular, less-expensive alternative to the Snapon stuff.
I understand the bank one front of motor, but where is Sensor 3 located. It is a unusual problem because it cuts out when ac is turned on turn it off it is fine, but some times it will cut out without ac running. If your exhaust sensor is working poorly, or not at all, you may notice a decrease in fuel efficiency, poor engine performance, stalling, hesitation, or a rough idle. Don't waste your money on a simple code reader. According to the firing order diagram bank one is the cylinder bank that is closest to the fire-wall and there should be an O2 sensor located there around the rear of the exhaust manifold or just after it. I'm sure it's the same thing as mine because i own a 2003 focus.
Good luck, I copied this answer from Chilton's. Follow the large black plastic tube from where it comes out of the air cleaner over to atop the engine where it eventually goes into the fuel rail. Your oxygen sensor, sometimes called an O2 sensor or air-fuel ratio sensor, measures the oxygen level in your exhaust gases. If there is too much oxygen in the exhaust, the fuel mixture is too lean, but too little oxygen indicates a rich fuel mixture. Was a mechanic during the same time, seven years at a Sears Auto Center, then ten years at a very nice family-owned Chrysler dealer.
Many auto parts stores will read codes for you for free. There are two; the price may vary by year. It is on the right side up by the gas tank back by the right, rear door if it's … a 4-door. Replacement 4-Wire Oxygen Sensor features stainless steel shell, hex nut, shield, Teflon-covered insulated wires, high-temperature rubber internal and external seals, and threaded tube coated with anti-seize compound. Place the oxygen sensor socket onto the ratchet and remove the O2 sensor from the exhaust pipe. All Replacement brand items are backed by 1-year, unlimited-mileage warranty.
Quality-tested to ensure efficient fuel combustion and helps reduce harmful emissions. Full scanners display all the data the various computers are seeing from the sensors in real time. You can watch its signal on a scanner, and you can introduce rich and lean conditions to see if it responds, but you have to remember they only measure unburned oxygen, not unburned fuel. Does this mean Sensor 2 post cat is faulty. The sensors come in two different wire lengths,be sure you get the right one. On models with two sensor, the second sensor is located in the exhaust pipe, under the oil pan. From what I remember with a focus, it should only have 2 sensors, sensor 1 will be located before the cat, and sensor 2 will be located after the cat.
