The whole cast was admittedly excellent, but it would have to be said that Carla Gugino carried the film. In reality, I lost track of time and was really gripped by the story. I was excited to see the reference in Gerald's Game - it felt like an Easter egg for fans of the Stephen King universe. Gugino and Greenwood deliver this material exactly as it should sound. He quotes what she said before leaving the house, indicating that he was in fact there at the time. Here he knows that less is more, never resorting to the techniques that a lot of filmmakers would have used to make up for the lack of story. It seemed, even on that initial reading, to be an unfilmable book, consisting mostly of one woman chained to a bed, the prose narrating her inner monologue in a way that would not translate to film.
