Disconnect the heater hose at the pump. Remove the oil level dipstick. To install: Dip the ends of the new hose into clean engine coolant to ease installation. Servicing requirements include three-monthly oil and filter changes, and annual exhaust system inspection. Failure to do this could result in the wheel coming off while the vehicle is in motion possibly causing loss of vehicle control or collision.
Disconnect the vehicle wiring harness connector from the distributor. Install the front wheel spindle. Coat the inside of each spark plug wire connector with silicone grease with a small screwdriver, and install the wires. After the cylinder head s are disassembled, thoroughly clean all of the components. Position the lower shock absorber mounting studs into the control arm and install the attaching nuts loosely.
Tighten them to 18 ft. If the valves are in extremely good condition, as well as the valve seats and guides, they may be lapped in without performing machine work. Connect the ignition wires to the spark plugs and reconnect the negative battery cable. For 2 wheel drive vehicles, see Section 8. Remove the sensor from the air cleaner outlet tube. Label all of the electrical and vacuum connections on the intake manifold. However, if you decide to tow a trailer, using the prior equipment is a must.
Remove the output shaft yoke washer, rubber seal and the yoke from the output shaft. Remove the air cleaner outlet tube. Remove the wrist pin from the new piston and lubricate the pin bores on the piston. Loosen the adjusting nut a half turn. Remove the engine front cover and water pump.
Pull out the motor and seal from the reservoir. Remove the boot from the stud yoke. There should be no odor of fuel as well. Remove the floor jack from beneath the transmission fluid pan. Be careful when working around the catalytic converter because of the extremely high temperatures generated by the converter. Center the steering wheel to the straight ahead position. Remove the linkage access cover, located on the right side of the dash panel near the wiper motor.
On Explorer, remove the grille. Connect the blower motor cooling tube. Use finger pressure only; do not use any tools. Lower the engine onto the front engine support insulators. As necessary, lower the steering column to gain working clearance.
Lubricate the outside of the pump seal with a dry lubricant, such as graphite powder. Remove the screw and pull the lamp socket away from the lens to access the bulbs. Insure that the wrist pin bushing in the connecting rod is usable, and lubricate it with assembly lube. Place the gear shift lever in Neutral manual transmission or Park automatic transmission. Remove the wheel and tire assembly. Start the inspection at the exhaust manifold where the header pipe is attached and work your way to the back of the vehicle.
Have the alignment checked by a professional repair shop. Installation is the reverse of removal. On vehicles with manual transmission position the selector lever in N. On models with the front locking differential, add 2 oz. Remove the housing and thermostat as an assembly. Check the drain plug to make sure the threads and sealing surface are not damaged.
