Because like most of you are saying, hurley and ben might have protected the island a long time. If Desmond is never zapped with a high amount of electromagnetism the new answer to everything , how would the Losties have ever found the closure they needed to let go? I'm sure the hardcore fanboys will have all their questions answer in due time, as this series lives on into the future. Yes, we do discover what is in the infamous hatch and we do eventually learn what the button does but there isn't much beyond that. This is why he remembers the other Losties as they are - this was how they were when he died. Jack's biggest and most interesting battle continues to be with John Locke, whose inferiority complex puts him at odds with Jack on more than one occasion.

But yes, Hurley probably outlived them all as he did become the protector! I am wondering if the extra 20 minutes will be a question and answer with Hurley and Ben, sitting on a log on the beach by the remnants of the statue. Sawyer just wants some grub.
I'd even say Michael Bay isn't too bad as a director. Jack and Kate proclaiming their love was totally contrived. Anyone who has read the Dark Tower series is understandably experiencing a sense of Deja Vu right about now. But all of this awakening is happening now. And can I just say how loud I shrieked when Sawyer and Juliette came back together? He's finally opened his hatch and discovered a bevy of new treasures inside to support his claims that the island and his connection to it are part of some much larger destiny.
After leaving customs, Sun and Jin reach their hotel and stay in separate rooms. They live out one life while suppressing another part of themselves completely. While the survivors on the beach have had it relatively easy, the tailies experience 48 days of hell in which their numbers shrink to a handful. However, they needed to come to some sort of reconciliation before getting the reward of blissful eternity. After seeing him off Zoe so suddenly with that knife, it definitely provided the fear that he might strike the marginally important characters of Rose and Bernard! He said if there was a button down there the 2 of them could fight about whether to push it or not. Flocke destroying the Island, Jack destroying Flocke.
Their Island relationship, their love for each other. Just somewhere between the real world and the sideways land. Those last few episodes in which he finds himself destined to push the button almost seem as if the were a scramble to give the character something substantial to do. I don't know if I ever thought that this tennis shoe was Christian's though. But clearly, things are being interpreted in different ways. Their introduction is one of the stronger aspects of the second season as it expands the Lost universe and gives us a glimpse of the island's history. Jin and Sun just didn't know what they meant by it yet.
