Image 3 of 13 If an output flange is grooved here from oil seal contact, fit a new flange, or the grooving will damage the new oil seal. The high ratio gears vary according to the vehicle model, with Defenders generally having a lower ratio than Discovery models. Oil leaks from front or rear output flange: Leakage from the rear flange might also contaminate the transmission brake shoes with oil. All information and content here is provided for free. Carefully lever it out with an old screwdriver or similar tool.
Put the rear plate and gear set on one side for now. There are three bolts down each side attaching the transfer box to the main box and it is the middle of the three on the right hand side that causes the problem. If you have oil leaking from the hand brake drum, then the output seal has started to leak - either just through age and normal wear or because the bearing behind it has failed and movement of the shaft is allowing oil to leak out. The downside of the centre differential is that, if a wheel on one axle loses grip and spins, all the transmission torque will be sent to that wheel it takes the path of least resistance. Some owners still prefer to have a centre diff lock which can be retrofitted on the grounds that it gives a little more driver control and ability in some more extreme off-road situations.
The new sump comes with a gasket, some thread lock and 10 nice new shiny stainless cap head bolts and washers. Slight movement can be expected here because there is always slight clearance in the parallel roller bearings supporting this flange, so it is unlikely to need attention. The symptom is a distinct knock from the central transmission area when taking up the drive, but especially if the vehicle was rocked back and forth by moving from first to reverse gear. I didn't actually silicone the threads, just a bead around the outside then around each bolt hole. Any mechanical device with moving or rotating parts wears out. The felt washer sits in a recess - when the nut is tightened the washer is compressed and thus stops oil from weeping out up the shaft splines. So, basically, instead of cooling the oil, the fins absorb the heath.
Grey oil suggests water contamination due to wading. If you are located in southern California, then visit the for a list of local repair shops around Los Angeles. From floor mats to filters to complete engines, we carry the widest range of parts and accessories for your Land Rover you will find anywhere! Replace the brake drum and it's retaining screw, adjust the handbrake back up and pull it on tight. You guys and Ashcroft are incredible. If the diff is unlocked and you turn one flange, this will just rotate the other flange and will not rotate the input gear How can I tell the ratio of my transfer case when its out of the vehicle? This image shows our standard linkage set up in a 1994 Defender 90 Soft Top. Let us know if we can help you with any of your off road upgrade needs.
Regardless of the size, a transfer case or unit is filled with and lubricated by a special fluid or gear oil. This unit really is the answer to the problem of keeping your Rover good on the street, but being able to tackle the heavy stuff off road. If it is in the 2 o'clock position and the diff will still not lock then try backing out the diff lock light switch, sometimes the switch plunger can stop the selector fork from sliding which stops it locking. Using a breaker bar or similar form of leverage - tighten the flange nut. Can you confirm oil temp has been lower after installing the new sump cover? This is a normal effect of driving with diff lock engaged, especially when reaching firmer ground where the tyres are less able to slip to release transmission wind-up.
It might be conventional engineering, but the fact that this design stayed in business from the One Ten of 1983 to the Discovery 2 which finished in 2004, and still lives on in the current Defender, is testament to brilliant design and manufacturing. It transfers the drive from the gearbox across and out at the front and rear of the transfer casing to drive the propshafts to the front and rear axles. When in extreme boggings or doing lots of low range work, the Land Rover transfer case oil can overheat, which could lead to premature failure of the transfer box. Next you simply unbolt the lower transfer box cover, then carefully clean up the mating surface ready for the new sump. I was wondering if a facet pump would pump gear oil - I'm using 75-85W Full synthetic so it flows better than traditional sludge.
Oil will find its way out via the splined main shaft keeping the splines lubricated, or the max oil level hole. If it's not in far enough the flange will damage the seal failry quickly and it will then leak. Join him on his adventures. Two of them are just threaded bar with nuts, am I right in thinking it doesn't matter what position they are in? The vehicle has not been driven or moved since filling up yesterday. C it only took 30min to get the box to 95.
Oil leaking from centre of front face: Oil can leak from the intermediate gear pin which passes through the front of the casing between the front housing and the gearbox. Usually this is due to either incorrect adjustment or wear in the linkage causing a reduced movement, take a look at the smal lever on the diff lock stud on the top of the front housing of the transfer case, when out of diff lock this lever should point straight ahead, when in diff lock this lever should be rotated clockwise and detent to the 2 o'clock position. A power transfer unit is attached to the transmission and simply provides the power output for the rear axle. When upgrading your Defender 110 to gearbox or rebuilding existing pay attention to examining the input gear for signs of excessive wear or damage. Shown above, transfer case as seen from. Hence, full torque is always transmitted to the wheels that have grip. You will experience clunking when changing gears if this part is worn.
