There is one thing and one thing only that makes this movie so unforgettable and that is Charlize Theron. The directing, the story line, acting, and everything else in the movie is remarkable and it all helps to show the pain in Alieen Wournos' lonely life. In 2009, Ebert named it the third-best film of the decade. This is a well-crafted, realistic and brilliantly acted piece of celluloid. Lee needs money, so she takes to the streets to make some cash.
Her only job had been as a hooker. Charlize Theron completely blew me away! This lack of resemblance was likely intentional for legal reasons. Not very accurate, at least physically. She murdered for money and to survive, it was never about the thrill of the hunt that drives most male psychopaths. To protect Selby and Thomas, Aileen admits that she committed the murders alone. She had a screwed up, abusive life. Make no mistake about it Patrick, she got some satisfaction out of the killings.
During Aileen's trial, Selby testifies against her, with Aileen's loving consent. As the years went by, I learnt to stop sharing them with people. Aileen Lee is on the verge of taking her own life when she meets up with Selby, a lesbian who is looking for companionship. The movie follows the tale of harried and hopeless Aileen Wuornos as she tries to pick up the pieces of her shattered and tattered life. The ambiance is pure sleaze, reflecting the true crime drama. Maybe Aileen also thought that she finally found a person that she could honestly trust.
It refuses to objectify Wuornos and her crimes and refuses to exploit her story in the cynical manner of true crime sensationalism -- insisting instead on seeing her as one of God's creatures worthy of our attention. Theron - who began her career as a model in her native South Africa before coming to the U. Although the media hyped Aileen Wuornos as the first female serial killer, in reality women have been murdering just as long as men. Actress Jean Smart is pictured at right. Her experience of love with Selby brings revulsion uncoiling from her memories; men treat her in a cruel way and pay for their sins and those of all who went before them. While Lee believes that giving up hooking and finding a real job is the key to her new life, Selby is too dependent to go out and get herself a job, therefore remaining reliant on Lee's income as a prostitute.
Making her major motion picture filmmaking debut, director Patty Jenkins obtained a lot of her research material for the film by exchanging letters with the real Aileen Wuornos before Wuornos' 2002 execution. The betrayal scene will stick in my mind for a long time to come. She was only convicted of killing six men because the missionary's body was never found. There have been a ton of books written about them. They express her wish that an execution date be set. Unfortunately the subject matter will most likely keep it from getting the recognition it deserves.
It is amazing how she was able to literally transform herself into a woman who looks exactly like the actual Aileen Wuornos, mannerisms and all. She confesses her actions to Selby, who has been angry with her for her failure to support both of them. At first the two are so thrilled that they like each other - that they are not alone anymore. On October 9, 2002, Aileen is executed by. Although she is initially hostile and declares that she is not , Aileen talks to Selby over a drink of beer. Although she kills for the first time in self-defense, she is also lashing out against her past. She is devoid of conventional moral standards.
The third document is the death warrant issued by Florida Governor Jeb Bush, which accommodates Wuornos' preference for execution. The reason I say pseudo, is that Aileen is not gay, but just desperate for companionship, and basically leads Selby on so that she will stay with her. She spares one man out of pity when he admits he has never had sex with a prostitute, but eventually kills another man who, instead of exploiting her, offers help. Selby is a lesbian who wants to come out of the closet against her family's wishes. Her mannerisms, her speech patterns, are so disturbingly accurate that she truly brings this woman to life. Aileen seemed so sensitive and gentle. Director Patty Jenkins begins Wuornos' story in 1989-90, just before she was caught and imprisoned.
Life does not stay peachy for the new lovers, and after many heart-breaking rejections from the job market, Lee returns to hooking in order to feed her and Selby. Abandoned by her teenage mother, Aileen was left in the care of her grandparents when she was just a toddler. I am asking here then for the Florida Supreme Court to step in and 'Do Something. She doesn't know how to occupy her body. She confronts Aileen, who justifies her actions by claiming she had only been protecting herself. They go out on dates and live off of the money that Aileen steals from her victims. She immersed herself so deeply into the role that she became almost unrecognizable as the Charlize you have seen before.
The first murder they show her commit was certainly not in cold blood. Here is the Best Performance by an Actress in 2003, whether the Academy gets around to giving it to her or not. Hell, she gives the greatest performance by anyone who ever played a serial killer. The film is shot in a gritty style on the highway, streets, bars and motel rooms.
Selby sees a story in the newspaper and the murders and begins to suspect Aileen as the killer. Thirdly, although Monster is primarily about Aileen the killer, yet the viewer is treated to a love story between Aileen and her lesbian lover. Her cursive is a little hard to read here at times, but it's still legible. Please watch this movie, I promise you won't regret it. All the doors were loudly slammed in her face. She said that kids who do not get any love or attention are spoiled as well. I was not sure I wanted to see this movie, but after seeing a trailer I became curious and decided to check it out.
