Complaint Number: 10262795 Incident Date: October 30, 2008 Date Added to File: March 23, 2009 Description of the Complaint: The contact owns a 2002 dodge durango. The failure and the current mileages were 178,433. The contact was unable to place the vehicle into drive. The contact stated that there was oil leakage in cold weather. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to shift into the park position.
The failure mileage was approximately 120,000. The failure occurred when the vehicle was both cold and warm and only when the gear was shifted into drive or reverse. It took us a long time to get the smell out. We took this to Dodge in gainesville several different trips and it would not repeat the problem for them. I continued to drive the vehicle for a few more weeks and noticed that a new problem had emerged.
The contact had to apply the emergency brake at times to prevent a failure. He said in his research he had read about transmission problems that could be related to both the throttle position sensor and the transmission speed sensor which are both relatively inexpensive and easy to change yourself. To start the vehicle, he had to shift into neutral and apply the emergency brake again to keep the vehicle from rolling away. I would recommend you to fix this problem if not you will end up burning the clutches in the trans. The dodge dealer denied that there was a problem with the ball joints. After I replaced that item, I noticed no difference.
Complaint Number: 10133414 Incident Date: January 1, 1901 Date Added to File: August 16, 2005 Description of the Complaint: The valve body went bad on the 2002 dodge durango. The contact stated that he was unable to shift the vehicle into reverse or park while the vehicle was idle. We had the same exact series of issues this year with a 2000 Dodge truck. They tell us that there is nothing wrong with it. The companies that re-manufactured transmissions believe so strongly in their workmanship and quality of parts that they feel very comfortable offering such a long warranty period. So when the transmission started acting funny after about 130,000 miles, I began to think my luck had finally run out.
When the transmission reached the third gear, the engine revved up to 3000 + rpm. When the engine heated up, there was sludge because the leaker stopped the strainer. If you get a low reading you most likely have a short in it. At least it happened at the dealership. I had to replace the whole transmission.
The contact stated that the gears failed to shift into park and that it was difficult to remove the key. The failure mileage was 128,000 and current mileage was 129,800. He applied the emergency brake to keep the vehicle from rolling away. Vance Sounds like the governor valve is sticking which will make the transmission think the vehicle is still moving. Complaint Number: 765403 Incident Date: July 5, 2002 Date Added to File: August 13, 2002 Description of the Complaint: Have taken the truck in 3 times, and it has been transmission failures, have had vehicle for 6 months, and the transission computer has been replaced. The trans pan needs to be removed.
I learned this today from an honest transmission shop. We called jim's Dodge and told them about the smell and they told us that there was nothing tha they could do about it. Although out of production for a while now, there are still plenty of these popular vehicles on the road. I have 2 Durangos, both have same problem described in recall notification 69542. Replace the filter and O-ring and make sure everything is seated well before re-assembling. So it wont come out of park until it runs for a few minutes? The failure mileage was 128,000 and current mileage was 129,800.
While you drive the darango if you hit a dump it jumps to one side or the other it does not stay center. The vehicle was not repaired. And then check under your distributor cap for any moisture be sure to take a rag and wipe and residue off. If you can catch the problem before it ruins the transmission, install an aftermarket transmission cooler to help keep temperatures under control. He believed there may have been an issue with the transmission and took the vehicle to a local mechanic.
