Having the flexibility to shift on the fly from two to four wheel drive without having to get out and lock the wheel hubs is a luxury that most of us take for granted, especially during a snowstorm. There are service bullitens for the problem, but there is no permanent fix. Loss of power to the drive train is not something to ignore, from personal vehicles to public safety vehicles, this power loss could turn into something much larger than some atf stain in the driveway.
You can still hear it but its not too noticable. The chevy dealer that I took my truck to never even mentioned this to me, and was very evasive about the whole issue. I put the truck on jack stands and put the truck into gear and determined it was definitely the transfer case. Sounds a little like the tire is rubbing on something, only the noise sounds faster than the tire is spinning and the tire is not hitting anything that I can see. Or it could be just a weird variance of the noises U-joints make when they get dry and are on their way out. But, the driveshaft makes it sound like it's coming from the front diff a little bit too.
Would you bother to switch to the the 241, or do you feel the shift motor on the 243 is reliable enough? Yours is a similar setup. Transfer case bearing overhaul kits are. This is transmission fluid and an instant sign that a seal or gasket on your transmission case is broken and needs to be fixed. Juse240: No, it still sounds the same, but doubtfull that it is the U-joints. Same answer from dealer pay us more money please. The contact discovered that the transmission was leaking fluid while backing out of the driveway.
After having the vehicle inspected by a repair shop, he was advised that the bracket in the transfer case failed. I have hear that there is a common problem on these, but nobody sems to know what it is. My transfer case has started making a horrible grinding noise. Start it up and check the trans fluid with dipstick. I'll start shopping around for a case, maybe I'll get a good deal. I put the truck up on jack stands and put her in drive and found out the noise is coming from the rear diff. A very tiny tiny amount of play in the slip yoke.
Took exactly two quarts each time. Also having issue with check engine light on constantly. Nick thanks for the reply jimk55- I actually found that the vacumme line going to the canister under the hood was unhooked fixed my vent problem too. Had my son crank the tire back and forth while I climbed around underneath. And this is causeing the noise? I've been too busy to look into this lately, but if anybody has any input it would be appreciated! I have this problem temporarily patched. Be carefull taking out that fill plug.
How many would you like? Shifts great and makes no noise. I went and picked up some of the new fluid. I'm kind of lost here. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. How long it would live really shouldn't be an issue, I wouldn't recommend attempting to run it through another plowing season regardless when you know it already has issues. After market parts have been developed to replace the cheap parts within the transfer case to prevent this from happening, unfortunately I did not research this issue prior to having the issue.
It is drivable until it breaks. Thanks for your help Spruce. I bought this truck at 165k and its at 193 now, and Ive never changed the t case fluid so Im going to check my fluid level before I panic. Cab z71 4x4 , the 4-wheel drive is not working, no lights show up on the buttons. Proceed with caution, I guess.
I had trouble finding this part at an auto store and got mine from a junk yard. Unfortunately, the slack isn't coming from just one spot. It has almost caused me to get in a bad accident. I did some searching on a couple Chev truck forums, and on this one there were some discussions on a c-clip type retainer breaking or falling off in the tailshaft area. The transfer case in the 98 is different I guess. Again, check all vac hoses for dryrot and cracks. I drained the fluid and I think if the ring and pinion where bad bigger piecies of metal would of came out but it was only fine shavings on the drain plug.
While driving 5 mph, the vehicle hesitated prior to depressing the accelerator pedal. I thought I was coming from the clutch fan because it doesn't occur when I let off the gas, only with my foot on the gas. Anyone else experience these symtoms or repair? It did have 62k on it. I then noticed a couple of pin holes on the case. If anyone has had a similar problem, I would really appreciate your feedback and suggestions. Completely overhauled T-case with parts listed below and she's good as new.

The parts become worn out prematurely due to the leaking fluid caused in many cases by the output shaft seal. Also, will not go into either 4 low or 4 hi. I'm thinking I'm going to have to overhaul this thing or replace with a used case now. I assume it's just a hand operated pump. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the u-joints needed to be replaced.
