One of the screws is behind the hood release lever. Monitor fluid level while engine warms. Vehicle front wheel drive with cvt transmission. You say your compressor went bad, but that may be the result of a problem and not the cause. And I also want to add that if this fluid level was this critical then I would think I would have alot of freestyles going thru my shop with transmission concerns as soon as one sprung the smallest leak. So, it seems Ford knows that there is a problem but refuses to stand behind its product or customers and fix it.
I used to think of Ford as making a quality automobiles and trucks, but no more. My shop service manual just came in last night. Checked fluid, it is 100 % on the line on dip stick but transmission is not working the way it should. Fords idea was if dont leak then the fluid levels good. Instead of braking, the car accelerated. The fluid should be checked with the transmission temp between 190deg F and 198deg F I think hot engine covers it running in park.

I recently put several hundred dollars in the front end for maintenance, normal wear and tear you would expect after 113,000 miles, but shortly after that, my transmission started making a loud roaring sound and after taking it to my repair man, I was informed the transmission was going out and there was no fix but to replace it.

Ford should be ashame of themselves for not taking responsibility for this transmission problem. I am now stuck without a vehicle and no way to get another one. After refill check oil level. Ive got this old timer who works with me, now im an interior designer and he sells appliances and has been his whole life, but anyways he owns a brand new tauras, and he gave his 500 to his daughter, he claims the motor on the thing is almost bullit proof if maintenanced properly. I cannot understand how the government can force a car maker to recall vehicles with bad trunk latches and not force the replacement of these terrible transmissions. . See for background: Discussion: This procedure does allow accurate fluid level setting which increases the complexity. I am afraid to allow anyone in my family to drive it. Have had all services done at dealer; the transmission fluid change, fuel filters, tune ups, antifreeze changed, etc.

I was firmly on the brake and no where near the gas pedal and I shifted into neutral and pushed harder on the brake and the car stopped. Rear calipers on the Freestyle are notorious for freezing up though. You only need accurate temperature for proper level setting. First time I noticed this in the vehicle. Well, I stopped for a break at the local beach and when I returned to my freestyle to leave I put the car in reverse to back out and it went into gear kind of hard but I figured that was because I was parked on a very slight incline, then shifted into D and it was smooth. After fluid inspection fill into suitable containers to verify amount. Fuel will still be in the filter so watch your eyes. There are class-action lawsuits filed about this issue. The 6 speed may fail, but at least you can find someone to fix it. There was no difficulty restarting the vehicle. Any way the 40 worked but got wedged as they do when they are to small, any way it got the job done.
