I will put a new exhaust system on it, new tires all the way around, and have the front end aligne. Recall was good through January 31, 2010. This car was very dependable. Was not aware it was under recall. The vehicle was not repaired.
This is the same issue with Ford trucks of the same vintage. I went online to look at possibly recalls and saw that there was one decribing the exact issue I have. It was just the range sensor. The mechanic stated that the battery and alternator would have replaced. While driving approximately 45 mph on normal road conditions, the warning indicators illuminated on the instrument panel. The consumer felt that something wasn't right an took the vehicle to her independent mechanic.
It thankfully had very good gas millage since it did so much traveling. All of the electrical components flickered inside and outside the vehicle. However, the trunk, while it looked tiny, managed to hold one convertible stroller and a pack and play! The failure mileage was 140,000 and the current mileage was 141,000. I don't feel she should have to pay to have the work done if it is a known problem with Mercury Cougar, and her car was one that was included in that recall. Fortunately the issue was discovered before the tank separated from the vehicle. After talking to several service managers at several dealerships the consensus is that the fuel pump overheats and stops working. Also, the back seats are deep bucket seats. The part did not arrive until mid July and the consumer dropped the vehicle off that morning to have it fixed. This proved unusable for us with the car seat.
She also stated that the engine occasionally stalled and one of the struts failed during a test drive at 60 mph. I am alson having issues with the transmission range sensor. I have taken it to the dealer 4 or 5 times. Because I've found the pump fuse blown on the last three occasions. Replaced the battery and took to shop to have alternator and whatever else looked at.

I intend to pull the single dent out of the rear quarter panel, sand away the little bit of surface rust away and have it painted. When looking on another website and searching recalls, the 2000 Cougar had no recalls or safety improvement campaigns. Lights would dim during accelerations or revving of engine. The car is also very easy to care for with regular maintenance and staying on top of your oil changes. New fuel filter, trans oil.

Some onehad took my vent tube off and stuck it straight down onto the hold down bolt stopping it up and it blew all the fluid out of the filler tube. The consumer learned there was recall , the consumer did receive a rebate and it was discovered that the fuel pump that was sold to the consumer was the same one that had been recalled. I hope this never happens to her or anyone owning a Cougar. Three weeks prior to the failures, the vehicle stalled after shifting the gear into neutral. The problem has gotten worse and now the alternator has failed twice in 30 days. Now instead of a flickering alternator light, headlights, and dash lights, I have an alternator light that stays on and everything else is still flickering.
The fuel pump was replaced as part of recall 04V421000. Sometimes it takes a minute for it to move forward when I hit the gas from a stop as well. The vehicle was not repaired. I was informed the fuel tank straps were special order since they do not normally fail. As of this day, on three November 2003, I myself changed another fuel pump on said vehicle. I have a V6 engine, and the instrument cluster, radio, interior lights, and head lights flicker when I start up my car and continue to do so.
The failure mileage was 75,000 and current mileage was 76,300. Also, the back seats are deep bucket seats. It still gets 28 miles to the gallon and looks and drives like its worth 2,500 dollars. This Mercury is a sport model, not the oversized family car most people picture with a Cougar anymore. I told him just do it and he did. However I couldn't do this for around 2 weeks because I had no money.
