I spend most of my time building new transmissions with all-new parts. I use the case to support the cover when I press in the sidecover seals with a 17-mm socket. These have a tendency to fly off the cover and get lost. Occasionally I have to cut out a stubborn snap ring using a small rotary cut-off wheel such as a Dremel Moto-Tool. Never strike the input shaft itself.
Step 2: Install Tailhousing on Midplate Placing it forward makes it easy to attach the fork to the reverse gear. I have no idea what the bolt below the shift lever is for but I suggest you pull the side cover and spin all the gears around to check for damage. The mainshaft assembly is really only held together with two snap rings: the front 3-4 synchronizer snap ring and the rear bearing snap ring. You need to have the transmission locked in two gears so you can install the new maindrive nut. Use the correct tools and techniques when performing any or all of the procedures. This acts like a sealant and a threadlocking compound.
Wipe away any excess sealant. The steel gears are soft and pullers easily damage them. The M-22 was generally installed behind severely powerful high torque big-block engines. Step 2: Install Front Bearing Place the slinger on the input shaft and tap on the front bearing. If you can, install the thicker one.
If the combs are bent they do not run along each other smoothly. If the case was damaged from a gear explosion, the thrust washers are often jammed from debris. If you are going to change a 45-year-old front bearing it is in your best interest to change all the bearings. Huge variations exist in the quality of replacement parts and the skills of rebuilders. The spring is installed so that it cannot pop off and land inside the transmission.
. If you are reusing a case with a stock bore, use 51813 Permatex to coat the front bore and rear of the shaft. Another common repair is a rear seal change. Our factory transmissions are dyno tested before leaving the factory, ensuring the highest quality, We offer a no hassle 12 month warranty, performance guaranteed. Focus on getting all the gears removed and then disassemble the sidecover and extension housing.
Muncies are rarely tight enough to need a press. Most are also seized, and you may need to apply heat with a propane torch in this area to knock it out. Step 13: Remove Input-Shaft Bearing Cage and Needle Bearings Remove the input-shaft bearing cage and lift out the 17 needles. Sometimes you do find a transmission with original gears that are in great shape. The object is to get the thickest ring in the rear mainshaft snap-ring groove. This one tapped gently into place.
Step 8: Tighten Mainshaft Nut Position the nut with the tapered side facing forward. Mainshaft Assembly Reassembling the mainshaft is pretty much a reverse of the disassembly procedure. Never use a dummy shaft to load needles. To speak to a Drive Train Expert or to place an order call toll free Need Stronger Parts? Install first gear with a little oil in its bore. Tilt the top of the cover down and catch the upper parts of both shift forks in their respective sliders first, then lower the cover into place. Try to be patient when you come across these rebuilding obstacles. At this point, the geartrain is completely apart.
New combs are harder and much better than the older ones. Was third always engaged when you ran first and second? If you think you are going to reuse them, mark the position and orientation of each fork so they can be reinstalled in the exact position. Ruined the summit driveshaft kit, then put the grease fitting on the back u joint against the pinion and got that stuck. Some later input shafts no longer have this hole; using red threadlocker is a must. You can engage a forward gear and R to lock it. Seat the nut with a swift strike from a hammer on the wrench.
