Actually after the first registry hack the problem never occurred again as the involved registry key was set as read-only not even Windows could overwrite its value. When I look at the registry key, it is as you suggested and permissions as you suggested.
There is also a command to extend the 30 days grace period that you need to type in in safemode. While imputing the new value, it started generated numbers that I could not delete. What I did was to set that registry key see my post to read-only, that way I denied Windows to lock me again. I can get into safe mode without networking, and I have checked to make sure the drivers are present. I would love to buy a brand new copy but of course it is far too old. I guess I can take it back to where I bought it and let them sort it out, but I would really like to be able to complain to Microsoft and sort the problem myself. It will not corrupt significant files of Windows through the activation process.
The whole activation thing got up my nose once too often. I did what you said, go in safe mode because the windows wont ask u for an activation. The man who installed this copy promises to fix it, but has never showed. I think why a few people got away with it is because they were accessing the registry stuff etc for the first time. I booted up into safe mode, no network support, then went into the system properties found the ugly yellow question marked hardware and loaded the drivers. The local MicroCenter sold me the last one they had so I had to drive to Virginia to get another one. Operating systems have a lifespan of about 7-10 years. So I'm trapped into this circle! Wasted over an hour on the phone with Microsoft East. He offers this information to me as if I had just won the lottery. Every one of them turned out to be annoying. One thing, i dont use a internet cable. I get home and it installs, but when I get up and running in Windows it still wants me to activate, so I decided to use my older activation key instead of the newer one. Any help would be much appreciated. I used it as a testbed and installed Ubuntu on it, played with it for a bit, and then left it to sit in a corner.
